{Photos} from the HEB Feast of Sharing

Dear Readers,
I was really happy and honored to volunteer today at the Palmer Events Center in Austin for the HEB Feast of Sharing. Over 10,000 Austinites of every race, color and creed were welcomed in and offered a free hot meal, a free phone call home and access to the United Way to help in applying for any public assistance they might be able to qualify for.
This is my 5th year to volunteer and every time I go I always have an amazing experience. Service above self is something that should never be lacking-- and service to the 'least among us' especially. So, big shout-outs to the St. Elizabeth kiddos I shuttled over who gave up their evening to serve food, bus tables, pass out silverware and just make a difference. Way to live it.
To everyone else, have a great Thanksgiving... and in a few days I'll return to our regularly scheduled snark.
Your friend,
FancyPants

{Point of Personal Privilege} HEB Feast of Sharing

I interupt my usual snarkiness to invite everyone in the Austin area to either eat or volunteer tonight at the 11th Annual HEB Feast of Sharing.

Tonight, HEB (for my out of state readers-- it's a grocery store... like Piggly Wiggly) will be feeding thousands of needy Austinites a completely free and completely tasty hot meal. Seriously... the stuffing is what dreams are made of...

This has been a FancyPants family tradition since high-school and the highlight of my Turkey Day festivities... besides getting to take 10 naps...

Need more deets? http://www.unitedwaycapitalarea.org/

I'll post pictures later tonight... especially if I get to wear a sweet hairnet.

Middle-aged white people remark about the election of Obama in ways that only middle-aged white people can understand...

Personal fave? Leon Wieseltier from the New Republic:

I woke up the next morning still under the spell of solidarity and love. I
decided to make the spell last. I gave away my tickets to a performance of some
late Shostakovich quartets, because for once I was not interested in the
despair. Instead I spent the day listening to the Ebonys and the Chi-Lites and
the Isley Brothers. For lunch I went to Georgia Brown's for fried green tomatoes.
